For some, this phase of life is marked by shifts in identity, body image, and eating patterns that can all impact someone's quality of life. For others, it’s a time when long-standing issues related to eating and body image concerns resurface and leave individuals feeling out of control. What we see in our clinic, and what research increasingly supports, is this: how we feel about our bodies during menopause can deeply influence our overall quality of life. What Is Menopause? Menopause is a natural biological transition marking the end of a woman’s menstrual cycle. It’s diagnosed after 12 consecutive months without a period and typically occurs between the ages of 45 and 55. The years leading up to this, known as perimenopause, often bring hormonal fluctuations that can affect both physical and emotional health. Menopause is not an illness, but it can feel disruptive, especially when symptoms impact your daily life or sense of self. Hormonal Changes During Menopause Menopause is driven by a natural decline in the hormones estrogen and progesterone. These shifts influence not only the menstrual cycle, but also mood, sleep, metabolism, body composition, and mental clarity. Understanding these hormonal changes can help make sense of what you may be experiencing. A reduction in oestrogen can cause a range of physical and emotional changes. Oestrogen is involved in: Regulating body temperature, which is why menopausal women may experience hot flashes and night sweats. Serotonin and dopamine production, whereby reduced levels of oestrogen can lead to increased anxiety, low mood, irritability, or mood swings. Nourishing the skin and connective tissues, leading to vaginal dryness, thinning skin, or reduced elasticity with low oestrogen levels. Regulating sleep, causing difficulties staying asleep and symptoms of tiredness, faitfue and low energy. Influencing appetite-regulating hormones like leptin and ghrelin casuing changes such as increased hunger, more frequent cravings, or unexpected weight gain. Another hormone, progesterone, also decreases during menopause. Progesterone is involved in: Promoting sleep by inducing calming effects. When levels drop, women find it harder to sleep and stay asleep, causing disrupted rest and emotional dysregulation. Progesterone is also involved in regulating emotions, causing women to feel feeling more easily overwhelmed or emotionally reactive during the menopause. Progesterone and oestrogen levels changing can also have a combined effect. This could include: Changes in body compoisiton including weihgt gain, particularly around the abdomen, and lose muscle mass more quickly than before. These changes are not simply aesthetic — they are deeply hormonal and metabolic, and can affect energy levels and physical confidenc. Cognitive changes also known as "brain fog can also be experienced. Symptoms could include forgetting words, struggling to focus, or feeling mentally slower than usual. Digestive symptoms, including bloating, constipation, or irregular bowel movements, all of which are influenced by hormonal fluctuations in the gut-brain axis These experiences can be deeply unsettling, especially in a society that often links women’s worth to youth, productivity, and thinness. However, whilst these symptoms can be overwhelming, by understanding more about the menopause and the impact it is having on your mental health and self-esteem, you can navigate these challenges and implemenet support that allows you to continue to enjoy life and shift into your next chapter of life. Mental Health, Body Image and Disordered Eating in Menopause Menopause can affect more than your hormones — it can shape how you think, feel, eat, and relate to your body. The combination of physical changes, emotional shifts, and societal pressures can significantly impact your overall wellbeing. Mental Health Many women notice changes in their emotional landscape during menopause. This can feel disorienting, particularly if symptoms are new or intense. Low mood, tearfulness or depression Heightened anxiety or panic Feelings of overwhelm or loss of control Difficulty concentrating or making decisions Body Image As the body changes, so can the way we feel about it. Shifts in shape, size, or appearance can be difficult to accept — especially in a culture that idealises youth and thinness. Dissatisfaction with physical changes Shame or discomfort around weight gain Grieving a younger version of your body Feeling invisible or disconnected from yourself Disordered Eating For some, menopause brings a return of old eating difficulties. For others, it may be the first time food and body preoccupations begin to feel unmanageable. Restricting food to regain control Emotional eating or bingeing to soothe distress Re-emergence of past eating disorder behaviours New fears around food, appetite, or weight Whatever you’re going through, these experiences are valid.
