Anorexia nervosa treatment, support and services with The Body Image Treatment Clinic

Exploring Anorexia Nervosa

Exploring the idea of you or a loved one having an eating disorder can be a daunting process. However, at the Body Image Treatment Clinic, we are here to support you on your recovery journey.

What is anorexia?

Anorexia Nervosa is characterised by an excessive preoccupation with body weight and shape, resulting in severe restriction and often significant weight loss. Crucially, it’s not simply a disorder about food or dieting. It often develops as a means to navigate overwhelming emotions or cope with challenging life experiences.

Recovery is always possible.

If the above sounds familiar, we invite you to explore some of the common behaviours we see in our clients who are experiencing anorexia nervosa. You may wish to explore them with the support of a loved one, and know we are here if you require further support.

  • Have you experienced significant weight loss?
  • Have you been restricting your food or calorie intake?
  • Have you reduced your portion sizes or the type of foods you eat?
  • Do you prefer to eat alone?
  • Do you miss or skip meals intentionally, rather than forget?
  • Have you noticed greater awareness and upset around the way your body appears?
  • Have you been exercising more lately or feel agitated if you couldn’t exercise?
  • Have you seen your friends less or isolating yourself more in general?
  • Has it felt difficult to concentrate on conversations?
  • Have you been feeling tired, dizzy or faint?
  • Have you noticed a change in your hair and nails, maybe becoming weaker or more brittle?
  • Have you been feeling cold more often?
  • Has your mood been low more often?
  • Have you been experiencing stomach-ache, constipation or bloating?
  • If you identify as a female, have you missed a period?

But my weight isn’t low?

We recognise that whilst weight is a factor of anorexia, it is not the only symptom. You may have heard of the term “Atypical Anorexia”, which is more common than the name suggests. The main difference between Atypical Anorexia and Anorexia is someone’s Body Mass Index (BMI). At the Body Image Treatment Clinic, we are here to explore and understand the challenges your individual experiences bring and are here to support you regardless of your BMI.
